Trattoria (Telephone: 2421 0451 – Map) is a new Italian restaurant located in Al Asalah Towers, more commonly known as the Oxy building nowadays. There is no visible sign outside the building for Trattoria, it is located in the back on the opposite side of the building that has Barcelos. Trattoria shares restaurant space and the kitchen with a Chinese restaurant called Mamasan.
The seating area of Trattoria is huge and has a glass side wall outlooking the inside of the Bahwan compound. We came on a Thursday evening for early dinner about a month ago and the place was totally empty. I went to Mamasan a couple of days ago and both restaurants seemed empty.
The menu of Trattoria is nice and focused. It offers starters, soups, salads, pastas, other mains, and desserts. There is also a special breakfast menu, too. For the starter we ordered a Gamberi Fritti (RO 4.200) which was a plate of deep fried prawns in a spicy tomato sauce. To our surprise the plate came with a bit of sweet and source sauce sprinkled on the plate for decoration, which was really not expected of an Italian restaurant, but probably a natural result of sharing the kitchen with a Chinese restaurant. The prawns had a really nice crunch and the tomato sauce was rich and had this guilty sweet chilli kick.
For the mains we ordered a Penne Con Pomodoro E Manzo (RO 3.500) which was penne pasta with beef, artichokes, black olives, asparagus, chilly, and tomato sauces. We also ordered a Deliziosa (RO 4.500) – a pizza of danish mozzarella, tomato sauce, turkey bacon, and gorgonzola cheese on top. The pasta was nice, but not exactly memorable and I thought that it was lacking in the presentation department. I don’t think that I have ever had gorgonzola cheese before, but after this pizza I realized that I am not a fan of it at all. It was borderline disgusting, but that’s probably because I am not a fan of this kind of cheese and not for something being wrong with the cheese itself. Besides the cheese the pizza was quite pleasant.
Trattoria offers a variety of cakes and gelato for desserts. We ordered a Chocolate Cake (RO 1.900) which I thought was nice even thought not as chocolate-y as I hope it would be.
In total we ordered 1 starter, 2 mains, 1 dessert and 1 large bottle of water. Our bill came to RO 16.000.
I thought the service at Trattoria was OK, the staff seemed friendly and the food came quickly and as ordered.
I think I had an OK meal at Trattoria, but the food was not special enough for me to say that this place is going to be my new favourite Italian restaurant in town. The fact that the restaurant shares space with a Chinese restaurant was very off-putting for me, they were playing oriental music, the staff members were wearing a Chinese uniform, and some Chinese ingredients were creeping into the Italian dishes. It is still worth trying I guess, maybe the place will get better with time.
