The Steak Company – Bareeq Al Shatti

This review happened during Ramadan 2018 when I dropped by The Steak Company in Bareeq Al Shatti (255555). We have reviewed The Steak Company in a previous review but I wanted to try it at a different time of year; Ramadan.

Steak Company’s décor is classic, with brick walls and booths and chair seating. I felt there were more chairs and tables crowded in the restaurant during Ramadan but I’m not entirely sure as I’ve been there quite a few times before and I didn’t feel that we were so close to our neighbours than we did this particular time.

When we sat down we were given their green and black olives as appetisers, which I didn’t really expect in Ramadan but I was pleasantly surprised. In addition to this, we were offered dates and coffee upon arriving slightly after Iftar time. Iftar at Steak Company consisted of a buffet of salads and soup, choice of a few mains from a list and then a choice of two desserts all for 10 OMR. From my understanding, the soups and salads change on a daily basis so if you go there one day it may change from the next time you visit. I liked that fact so if we decided to come again during Ramadan it wouldn’t be entirely the same.

The buffet of salads included 6 main salads including a beetroot salad, potato salad, a leafy pomegranate salad, a couscous salad, mango/papaya salad and a beef salad. Unfortunately, there were no placement cards and it was hard to identify what it actually was. Also, the dressings were put in the middle of two salads so you didn’t know which dressing belonged to which salad. I asked the staff but the staff didn’t know either! Nonetheless, I thought most of the salads were top notch in terms of quality and I especially like the beef salad and the mango/papaya Thai salad.

They also offered a soup of the day and accompanying bread. I liked the soup of that day which was a lentil soup.

Not very long after, our main dishes arrived. My partner and I decided on the same dish, the only steak on the menu. I found it a little troubling that there was only one steak on the Iftar menu as a choice given that it was a steak place but I quickly forgot about it after devouring my steak. I remembered when we came for Iftar last year there were definitely more steak choices. The steak comes exactly as it would a la carte, cooked to your desired level of doneness, served with mushroom, pepper, chimichurri sauce and your choice of a side which included vegetables, fries, wedges or mashed potatoes. We both went for the mashed potatoes. All in all, the steak was cooked perfectly, the sauces were delicious and the mashed potatoes were done very well and melted in your mouth.

Next came dessert in which we both chose the date pudding. Although this was slightly charred on the outside, we found the inside very delicious and it was one of the better desserts I’ve had in a while.

Total bill came to 20 OMR for two people for iftar. In my opinion, it was total value for money and I will undoubtedly return next year for iftar and of course before then for a la carte dining.
