Retro – Shatti Al Qurum

Retro (Telephone: 24571334) is a burger diner located in Shatti Al Qurum right next to Royal China and My Cupcake in the Qurum Gardens compound.

The seating area of Retro is relatively small, but makes good use of the space as there seem to be a lot of tables. I came on a week day and there was only one other occupied table besides ours during our stay. The place is actually a bit darker than what it seems like in the image above, and sort of has a feel and look between TGI Fridays and B+F.

An irritating thing about the menu at Retro is that it is printed on dark glossy paper which is extremely hard to read. After squinting my eyes for a few minutes it turned out that the menu of Retro offers food similar to B+F, but with a fewer number of burgers. Retro serves a number of starters, burgers, sliders, pizzas, pastas, sandwiches and salads.

For the starter we ordered the Atomic Fries (RO 2.650) which had hot cheddar, beef, beans and jalapenos. The dish came way too hot, especially the cheese, and we could barely eat it at the start. The recipe used it actually nice, but we had to eat really slow to ensure that we do not burn our tongues, but then the mains came before we managed to finish half of it so we just moved on to the mains and did not finish the starter.

For the main I ordered a Sherry California burger (RO 2.750)  which had a beef patty with avacado, jalapeno, onion, and cheddar cheese. I thought the size was perfect, it had a home-made feel to it, and I thought it was nice. I sort of assumed that the burgers would not have fries on the side as we all are kind of used to it from B+F and GBK, but here they actually come with the burger. We told the waiter about our main course choices before we asked for the Atomic Fries, I think a little bit more sophisticated waiter would have actually told usnot order fries of the starter when our mains came with some.

For the dessert we went for a Lava (RO 2.350) cake which was a simple lava cake with ice cream on the side. It took a bit of time to arrive, but it was nice and delicious.

I also had a Strawberry Sin mocktail (RO 1.850) which had strawberry juice and syrup, kiwi, and pineapple. I really had very little expectations about the juice, but I was surprised at how good it turned out to be!

In total we ordered 1 starter, 2 mains, 2 drinks , and a dessert. Our bill came to RO 13.900.

I thought the service was good, our food came quickly and as ordered and the waiters seemed to be friendly and asked how we found the food throughout the meal and they were not annoying.

One thing I really liked about Retro is that their menu mentions only the full and final price of each item with all the taxes included, so you know exactly how much money you are going to pay. I wish all restaurants would just do this!

I think that overall I had a good experience at Retro, the food and service were both good though not necessarily mind blowing.

Have you guys been to Retro, what do you think of it?

We felt like we are in a decorated prison. The food quality is just fine.
Overall a cheap duplicate of b+f

comeon guys we need to get over b+f , there is more to food than b+f, well i guess we haven’t had alot of exposure on this kind of food and our taste starts and ends at b+f but i think we should try other places as well, and yeah b+f weren’t the inventors of burgers, anyway i appreciate hard work and the concept by Retro and want to give them credit for it, well down guys 🙂

  • It’s really difficult not to compare burger places to B+F, but I have to agree the owners of Retro must’ve worked hard to launch this restaurant. You didn’t tell us if you actually tried their food?

  • @c65cc9a9de9ac5473a46ae5efe4f8252:disqus is there a special dish which you liked and you can recommend to others?

  • Wkaar

    Have been there twice
First time I liked the food especially the lasania and the service was ok
The second time the low rider wasn’t even warm
And the lasania was very oily,, and the stuff wasn’t friendly.
I don’t like the red light there

i was there last night… and i have to say that i’m really disapointed with the food quality… it feels like its a “cheaper version” of b+f !!

  • ?????

    B+f made in china

  • bigmjt

i think its jst a cheap imitation of bnf and slider station… the food ws no where near to what they tried to imitate… the place ws abit uniqe.

Not a great experience at all. Food was served cold, waiters didn’t know what the sauces were and served with no enthusiasm. What a pity to invest so much in decorations when your staff needs more training and a dose of motivation.

Had to visit it a few times because of my bf, but hopefully never again. The service is below average, their hunter steak, which is an interesting serve of a few pieces of steak with different sauces, always came blackened due to overcooking. Regardless over requests to make it less cooked, it remained the same so did not even try explaining how carcinogenic it is. Their cream soups lack thickness with a bowl of cream and some veggies in them. The last drop however was ordering a fruit salad with mayo (!) and garlic (!!) in it! Even if it’s the chef’s or owners’ invention, customers ordering it as a dessert must be informed. Could hardly swallow a spoon of it and sent it back to the creative chef to find it later in the bill. No apologies or complimentary items offered. The waitress simply vanished to let the other one deal with it. Beyond disappointing..
